After the bitter bankruptcy against Red Bull at the Formula 1 home game in Imola, Ferrari countered. A new rear wing should remedy the top speed deficit and let the Cavallino Rampante gallop past the “bulls” on the streets of Miami again.
As the “Corriere della Sera” reports, the team in Maranello is working on a new “rear” for the F1-75. The revised rear wing is said to be narrower and reduce drag, all in all more aerodynamically efficient.
Less drag means more speed on the straights. This is exactly where the dog was buried for Ferrari against Red Bull.
In the curves and in terms of traction, the reds are still top. In terms of speed on the straights, however, Red Bull had the upper hand in the end. The advantage of the Dutchman was particularly evident in the direct duels between Charles Leclerc and Max Verstappen.
“We lose a bit of performance and therefore have to keep working on it,” said Ferrari team boss Mattia Binotto.
Big Spain upgrade package in the pipeline
Top speed is also required on the new track in Miami. The Miami International Autodrome has a long straight in the last section of the track and also a long full-throttle arc in the middle section. The cars are likely to hobble there again properly, a problem that particularly affects Mercedes.
According to “Corriere della Sera”, Ferrari apparently has a smaller underbody upgrade for the Sunshine State up its sleeve in addition to the rear wing to mitigate the bouncing.
At Ferrari, however, all of this is just the starting signal for a larger “more substantial innovation package” (Binotto), which Scuderia wants to screw on the F1-75 at the next but one GP in Barcelona.
