Michael Schumacher’s Ferrari F300 from the 1998 Formula 1 season has a new home. In an auction that has now ended, the car achieved a gigantic selling price.
Since last weekend, the auction house RM Sotheby’s with Michael Schumacher’s F300 from the 1998 Formula 1 season, a very special gem in the shop window. Less than a week later, the “red goddess” has a new home.
As the auction house announced, the car, which was purchased directly from Ferrari by its previous owner in 1999, went over the counter for a whopping 6.2 million US dollars. RM Sotheby’s did not reveal who won the bid.
What is known, however, is what kind of one-off car the buyer secured. The car with chassis number 187 is not only a real eye-catcher, but also a Formula 1 car that is second to none.
The F300 with the aforementioned chassis number was only used in four races in the 1998 season, but remained undefeated in these four races. According to RM Sotheby’s, this is the most successful and only undefeated Ferrari chassis in Formula 1 history to have been used in at least three races.
Schumacher draws the short straw in the World Championship fight
Michael Schumacher drove the car at the races in Canada, France, Great Britain and Italy. The man from Kerpen raced to victory in all four races, and his teammate Eddie Irvine was also on the podium in all four races.
If the Scuderia had used the F300 and chassis 187 combination more often, the car might have been remembered as Schumi’s first world champion Ferrari. So it was enough for the German legend in the final accounts of the World Cup, however, only to place second behind the Finn Mika Häkkinen, who had 14 points more than Schumi in the end.
