Because Lewis Hamilton’s contract expires at the end of the season, the Mercedes driver has long been associated with saying goodbye to the Silver Arrows. Although both team boss Toto Wolff and Hamilton emphasize that they want to continue working together, a Formula 1 insider now clearly advises the F1 record champion to flee.
Lewis Hamilton shouldn’t bother driving behind with Mercedes anymore, according to ex-Formula 1 driver and ex-team boss Eddie Jordan. The 75-year-old believes that his British compatriot should urgently reorient himself after the current season in order not to have to give up the world title for the fourth year in a row.
Speaking on his Formula For Success podcast co-hosted with F1 legend David Coulthard, Jordan said he was concerned for Hamilton and hoped he found happiness again soon.
But how should that work with the Silver Arrow, which has been inferior for two years? Jordan’s answer was unequivocal. “He has to get out of there for that,” said the ex-team boss, who was responsible for Michael Schumacher’s F1 debut at the time in 1991, referring to Mercedes. “He has to move on!” Jordan concluded.
“Just like he did at McLaren back then,” added the Briton and said clearly in the direction of the 38-year-old: “Get away from Mercedes, Lewis!” It’s time to “reinvent yourself somewhere else.”
However, Jordan did not mention where Hamilton should go. Most recently, the seven-time world champion had been associated with Ferrari several times. But even the Scuderia can’t keep up with Formula 1 high-flyer Red Bull at the moment.
Formula 1: Jordan admits errors in assessment
Jordan would not have thought that Hamilton (also) ended up behind George Russell last season. Not because Hamilton was so weak, but because Russell was so strong. “I misjudged him,” admitted the former team boss. He was surprised that Mercedes brought in the then Williams driver.
But: “He absolutely blew me away.” The young Brit was “a great commitment,” Jordan continued. “I admit: I was wrong.” Russell scored 275 points in the drivers’ championship last year (fourth place), Hamilton ended up with 240 points and sixth place.
“I never thought he would do what he does and I never thought he would beat Lewis,” Jordan said.
