The Dane Kevin Magnussen returns to the Formula 1 team Haas as a teammate of Mick Schumacher. The 29-year-old replaces the Russian Nikita Mazepin at the US racing team, who had to leave Haas as part of the sanctions due to the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine.
Magnussen had already driven for Haas from 2017 to 2020 before the team opted for a new driver pairing. It was a “simple decision” to hire the immediately available Dane again, said team manager Günther Steiner on Wednesday.
Magnussen will be used alongside Schumacher and reserve pilot Pietro Fittipaldi for the test drives in Bahrain that begin on Thursday. Magnussen said he had recently looked around for new opportunities for the future, but a return to Formula 1 was “simply too tempting”. Last year he drove in a sports car series in the USA.
In addition to Magnussen, Nico Hülkenberg was also named as a candidate for the regular cockpit at Haas. The place had become vacant because the team had parted ways with Mazepin and Russian title sponsor Uralkali.
