Günther Steiner spoke out for the first time after leaving Haas. The fired team boss shows understanding for the racing team boss who no longer wanted him, but regrets the manner in which he was fired. Steiner can imagine a return to Formula 1 – but not at any price.
The expulsion came over the phone. Between Christmas and New Year, Haas owner Gene Haas called Steiner and told the South Tyrolean that he would no longer rely on his services. That’s what Steiner said at the Autosport International Show in Birmingham, where he made his first public appearance since leaving the US team.
Steiner’s contract expired at the end of 2023, his successor as team boss is the Japanese Ayao Komatsu. The 58-year-old had led the Haas team since it entered Formula 1. Last year the racing team ended the season in last place. Not enough for Gene Haas. The American said his team’s performance was “embarrassing”. Steiner had to leave because of this.
Steiner admitted that the boss’s decision surprised him, but Haas had every right to direct the team’s fortunes the way he wanted.
Steiner left it open whether he wanted to return to the paddock. “If there is something interesting that challenges me then yes, but just looking for a job to stay in Formula 1 might not be what I want.” He is “in no hurry” and doesn’t know “whether Formula 1 wants me.”

Steiner became incredibly popular through the Netflix series “Drive to Surivive”. “There will always be people who want to see me in Formula 1, I have met a lot of people and made a lot of friends,” said the Italian.
Steiner regretted that he was not able to personally say goodbye to the Haas crew. “Yes it hurts [sich nicht verabschieden zu können]”But they all know me and know that I appreciate what they have done,” he said a few words of farewell to the Haas employees and fans on stage.
“I just want to thank all the team members who I didn’t get to say goodbye properly when I said goodbye. That’s why I’m doing it this way now. And I also want to thank all the fans who supported us while I was there . This is fantastic – thank you to everyone for the support I have received and continue to receive.”
