George Russell is currently in crisis with Mercedes in Formula 1. In the current season, the Silver Arrows are still well behind their own expectations. However, the Brit has never regretted his move to the Brackley team.
Before the Australian Grand Prix, Mercedes is currently only third in the Formula 1 Constructors’ Championship. Leader and defending champion Red Bull is already 49 points ahead.
“Unfortunately we have to catch up again. But we have shown that we can do it.” George Russell commented on the disappointing start to the season with the Silver Arrows in an interview with “Sport Bild”.
But the 25-year-old was combative. “I think it’s premature to speak of an era at Red Bull,” said Russell: “Yes, they are currently dominant – but only since the second half of last year. For an era, you have to be at the top a little longer than three quarters of a season.”
Formula 1: Mercedes change “not for a second” regretted
Mercedes, on the other hand, was able to win all driver and team titles in Formula 1 seven times in a row between 2014 and 2020. Ahead of the 2022 season, Russell switched from Williams to Mercedes. The hope of going straight to the world championships with the traditional racing team was not fulfilled.
However, Russell has not regretted his move to Mercedes. “Not for a second,” he clarified: “In Formula 1 there is only one driver in a team who is happy: the one who won last. We will be more often in the future because Mercedes has the best mechanics and Engineers, I was relieved to come into the factory after the start of the season and see how hard everyone is working.”
So there would be “no panic, no chaos” at Mercedes. “Everyone is focused on solutions. I didn’t expect otherwise, but it reassured me that if I had to pick one place for the next 15 years, it would undoubtedly be Mercedes,” said Russell.
