Lewis Hamilton’s contract with Mercedes ends in the summer of 2023, but team boss Toto Wolff recently did not rule out that the record world champion in Formula 1 could still do his laps in the motorsport premier class for five more years. Now Hamilton has spoken out for himself.
“Possibly, yes, I’m feeling good. I love what I’m doing,” Hamilton retorted from “motorsportweek.com” confronted with Wolff’s statements.
“We still have a lot of work to do, we still have a lot to achieve, so I don’t plan to go anywhere anytime soon,” Hamilton continued.
The fact that he does not state more clearly that he wants to spend another five years in Formula 1 is simply due to the fact that his future plan is “not set in stone”. However, the 37-year-old leaves no doubt about one thing: “I plan to stay with Mercedes for the rest of my life, that’s for sure.”
Hamilton expressly includes that he also wants to work for Mercedes “beyond racing”. There is a lot to do, after all, Mercedes is “not just a car manufacturer,” explains the Briton.
Hamilton’s “immediate focus” is on winning more world championships
“There are many things we can do together and I want to be a part of that. I want to be part of this shift and work process with Mercedes, well beyond races and championships, but right now it’s about winning world championships, and that’s the immediate focus,” Hamilton continued.
However, Hamilton will no longer have anything to do with the title in 2022. However, 2023 is likely to be followed by the next attempt to win the eighth world title in F1. A goal that should have a very special appeal. Hamilton currently shares the title of record world champion with Formula 1 legend Michael Schumacher. Another success would make Hamilton the sole record champion.
