Formula 1 | Ferrari boss criticized: “Didn’t cut a good figure”

Pole position in Miami, Barcelona and Monaco. But Ferrari didn’t win the races. That’s “certainly a disappointment,” says Ferrari team boss Mattia Binotto of the last three grands prix of the 2022 Formula 1 season, and something to think about at Ferrari.

Because the traditional Italian racing team recently lost important points to Red Bull and also the lead in both Formula 1 overall standings. Because Ferrari didn’t manage to convert the speed from qualifying into the race.

“If you have the fastest car, get pole position, but don’t win the race, then that’s kind of a disappointment,” said Binotto. However, his team did nothing wrong, at least in Spain: “We had a problem with reliability when we were in the lead.”

Monaco shows: Ferrari “needs some more time”

Monaco, in turn, brought another insight. Namely, that Ferrari didn’t have the right overview at the command post at the crucial moment. Binotto admits: “We didn’t cut a good figure when assessing and making decisions.” And again Red Bull was there and dusted off the race win.

Binotto is convinced that his team will learn the lessons from these events. “And these situations will make us stronger,” he says.

“Of course it’s perfectly clear to us: Being fast is one thing, but winning is another. That’s even more difficult. And we as a team continue to learn and make progress,” explains the Ferrari team boss. Then a decisive sentence falls: “Maybe it just needs a little more time.”

Restructuring in Maranello

Binotto is probably alluding to various restructurings in the Ferrari team. Over the past few years, the Scuderia has partially repositioned itself. Since 2021, for example, the chassis department has consisted of four sub-units and there are also new people in charge.

And Binotto himself also vacated his place at the team’s command post in 2021. At that time he said: “For me it is important that the team and the people continue to develop.”
