After the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine, the consequences were already clearly felt in the world of sport. Virtually all upcoming major events in the sports world that were supposed to take place in Russia have now been cancelled.
Formula 1 announced last week that it did not want to come to Sochi this year. Facts have finally been created.
As initially reported by several agencies, Formula 1 has officially terminated the contract with the organizer of the Russian Grand Prix.
Until recently, the Russian organizer had claimed that a race weekend could still be possible in September because the contract was only suspended.
But now Formula 1 has finally provided clarity and ended the contract with the Black Sea race track.
“Formula 1 can confirm that it has terminated its contract with the Russian Grand Prix organizer. This means that Russia will no longer have a race in the future,” said an official Formula 1 press statement.
There are no races in Putin’s birthplace of St. Petersburg
The premier class of motorsport and the Russian organizer had actually planned to drive in St. Petersburg – the birthplace of the Russian ruler Vladimir Putin – after the races at the Sochi Autodrom from 2023.
The original contract actually guaranteed the Russians the right to hold a Formula 1 race until at least 2025.
The decision to terminate all agreements with the Russian organizer is said to have been made immediately after the Russian invasion of Ukraine.
Whether there will be a replacement Grand Prix in another country on the weekend of September 25 was not clear until the very end.
