Formerly at FC Schalke 04: Former world champion Mustafi before a move to the second division?

The currently clubless German ex-world champion Shkodran Mustafi could move to the Italian Serie B.

Second division football team Sampdoria Genoa is considering signing the 31-year-old defender, as sports director Andrea Mancini told the newspaper “Il Secolo XIX”.

“Maybe. There is a list of three to four names, there are not many players without a club. We are currently trying to determine who is physically fittest,” said Mancini when asked about Mustafi.

Sampdoria is looking for a short-term defender following the injury to central defender Alex Ferrari.

Mustafi played for Genoa from 2012 to 2014 in his career. He then played for FC Valencia and Arsenal FC, among others, as well as for Schalke 04 for six months in 2021.

Mustafi most recently played for Spanish second division club UD Levante and has been without a club since his contract there expired at the end of last season. After a thigh operation last November, he is currently keeping fit in Munich.

The ex-Bundesliga professional is not yet thinking about ending his career. “I’m just keen to play for a few more years. I’m only 31 and of course I’ll try,” Mustafi recently told the portal “transfermarkt.de”. The motivation is that recent times have been catastrophic. “I don’t want to say goodbye to football like that. Absolutely not,” he said.
