Former Wolfsburg coach Andries Jonker is the new coach of the Netherlands women’s national soccer team.
The Dutch association KNVB announced that the 59-year-old had been hired as a bond coach for the Oranje women until the 2025 European Championships. The World Cup qualifier in Utrecht against Iceland is scheduled for September 6th.
The former assistant coach to Louis van Gaal at Bayern Munich and FC Barcelona was already interim coach of the Oranje women in 2001. Jonker is the successor to Britain’s Mark Parsons, from whom KNVB parted ways after disappointing performances at the Women’s Football Championship in England. The Netherlands, still European champions in 2017, were eliminated by France in the quarter-finals.
Especially with a view to the World Cup qualification, a replacement for Parsons had to be found at short notice. According to the KNVB announcement, Jonker said of his new job: “We have ambitious goals, but also an enormous amount of quality and talent and can draw from them for the 2023 World Cup.”
