Former Wimbledon champion Murray maintains title chance in Stuttgart

Stuttgart (AP) – The two-time Wimbledon winner Andy Murray stopped the top seed Stefanos Tsitsipas at the tennis tournament in Stuttgart and kept his chance for the first lawn title in six years.

Thanks to the 7:6 (7:4), 6:3 against the top Greek player, the former world number one made it into the semi-finals at the Weissenhof. On Saturday, the 35-year-old Scot will play Australian Nick Kyrgios, whose opponent Marton Fucsovics from Hungary gave up 7-6 (7-3), 3-0 for Kyrgios.

In 2019, Murray had already announced the end of his career due to his serious hip problems, but then returned after an operation. He has won 46 titles on the ATP tour. Murray last won a tournament on grass in 2016, when he triumphed at Wimbledon for the second time since 2013. The Scot, number 68 in the world, has lost contact with the world leaders, but he proved his qualities against Tsitsipas, fifth in the world rankings.

In a high-class and exciting quarter-final, Murray secured the decisive advantage in the tie-break of the first set thanks to a net roller. In the second half, thanks to a backhand pass, he managed to break 4-2 against the Greek, who was twelve years his junior.

In the second semi-final of the 769,645 euro grass event, Cologne’s Oscar Otte meets last year’s Wimbledon finalist Matteo Berrettini. For Otte, the 2019 Italian winner of Stuttgart is about reaching an ATP final for the first time.
