Former Trump advisor receives prison sentence for obstructing investigation into storming of Capitol | Abroad

Peter Navarro, a former economic adviser to US President Donald Trump, has been sentenced to four months in prison. Navarro is said to have obstructed Congress’ investigative powers. The politician did not respond to the request to testify about the storming of the Capitol by Trump supporters on January 6, 2021.

In September, Navarro was found guilty of contempt of Congress. In February 2022, he refused to accept an invitation from the committee in the House of Commons that was investigating the storming. Navarro also ignored requests to provide certain documents.

Trump’s confidant stated that he had ignored the congressional subpoena because Trump had ordered him to invoke so-called ‘executive privilege’. This allows the White House not to release confidential information in certain circumstances.

The prosecutor emphasized that Navarro could also have appeared before the committee in that case to announce that the documents could not be released. The politician put himself “above the law” by ignoring the summons, it said.

A year after the storming, Steve Bannon, another former Trump adviser, was sentenced to four months in prison for the same offenses. He appealed, and Navarro also plans to appeal.
