10 years. Former top athlete Veerle Dejaeghere (50) has been waiting for an adopted child for so long. “You can see that this is a money game, say friends. And then I get angry, right,” she says candidly. But now that Minister of Welfare Hilde Crevits (CD&V) has temporarily stopped adoptions from abroad – after malpractice – she has to wait even longer. “I received – hold on – an email from Colombia that my house was too rural and the nursery was not ‘cozy’ enough for a girl.”
