Former State Secretary Menno Snel withdraws from race for top EU job | Financial

The finance ministers of the euro countries (Eurogroup) are discussing further in Brussels about the three candidates who are still in the running to succeed the current director of the permanent EU emergency fund. Because others do not follow Snel’s example, there is little chance that a successor can be appointed on Monday.

“It’s a shame I didn’t make it,” Snel responds. “But fortunately there are several good candidates. I wish the eventual winner every success.”

Snel was recently nominated by fellow party member Sigrid Kaag (Finance). In the previous cabinet, Snel resigned in 2019 because of the allowance scandal. He then became active in business and at the scientific bureau of D66.
