Former PSV coach Schmidt wins well from Midtjylland with Benfica
Roger Schmidt is almost certain of a place in the play-offs of the Champions League with Benfica. The German trainer, who had PSV under his wing for the previous two seasons, saw his team win 4-1 against FC Midtjylland on Tuesday. The return in Denmark will follow next week.
Attacker Gonçalo Ramos played the leading role with three goals at Benfica, where the Belgian former Ajax player Jan Vertonghen was on the bench. In the play-offs, Benfica of Midtjylland will face Ukraine’s Dinamo Kiev or Austrian club Sturm Graz. The first meeting between those two clubs is Wednesday.
Benfica reached the main draw of the Champions League last season by beating PSV in the play-offs. In the eighth finals, the Portuguese were then too strong for Ajax.
