Former post office in Heemstede designated as a municipal monument

The former post office on Binnenweg has been designated a municipal monument by the municipality. This means that an owner may not just change, disrupt or tear down the building. According to local resident Anita, who started a signature campaign in the autumn of 2021 to keep the property, the residents have reacted ‘with cheers’ to the news.

The monument status for the former post office on Binnenweg in Heemstede was requested in the autumn by three heritage institutions. After the heritage committee endorsed the cultural-historical and architectural value, the municipal executive indicated in January that it wanted to designate the former post office as a municipal monument. After a period of submitting views, the Municipal Executive has now actually recognized the monument status of the building.

Anita, who lives next door to the former post office, started a signature campaign for preservation. “The applicants in particular won, the heritage institutions. But as local residents, we naturally supported the application wholeheartedly. We responded with laughter.”

Although Anita has always had faith in a good outcome, it was still exciting. “Ultimately, the municipality takes a decision and it must dare to opt for culture. But with the advice of the committee, it would have been very implausible if the municipality had denied the monument status. It is also such a striking building!”
