Former Pakistan Prime Minister gets fourteen years in prison for corruption | Abroad

Former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan and his wife have been sentenced to 14 years in prison for corruption in a case over gifts they received while he was in power. Local media reported this.

Imran Khan, along with his wife Bushra Bibi, was accused of receiving gifts while in power and then reselling them at a high price. All gifts must be declared and only gifts worth less than a certain amount may be kept or purchased at an officially agreed upon price.

On Tuesday it was announced that Khan had been sentenced to ten years in prison for making confidential diplomatic documents public. Shah Mahmood Qureshi, former foreign minister and number two of the Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party founded by Khan, received the same sentence.

Khan served as Prime Minister of the country from August 2018 to April 2022. He was deposed with a vote of no confidence in parliament. Since then he has been embroiled in several lawsuits. He has spent most of his time in custody since his arrest in August.

The two trials were held at Adiala prison. Khan is not only charged in dozens of cases, but has also been declared ineligible for five years. The election campaign has been marred by allegations of fraud and oppression against the PTI.
