Former mayor Mathilde van den Brink of the former municipality of Gieten passed away in her hometown of Utrecht. This has been announced by the municipality of Aa en Hunze. Gieten is now part of that municipality.
Van den Brink was mayor from 1980 to 1986. In 1980 she was the first female mayor in our province.
“During this period, she devoted herself to the municipality of Gieten and its inhabitants,” writes the current municipal council.
Van den Brink’s administrative career was long and varied. After her term as mayor, she was, among other things, chairman of the Council for Youth Policy, member of the European Parliament on behalf of the PvdA and observer at elections in Kosovo and Afghanistan.
Van den Brink died on August 22 at the age of 82.
