Former gynecologist Henk Ruis, who fathered three children with his own sperm, speaks in a short statement about a ‘bad thing that should never have happened’. It has been established in three people that their DNA matches that of Ruis and that they are therefore his children.
The fertility center Nij Geertgen and the organization Fiom reported this in an article in the Volkskrant on Friday. The conception of the children is said to have happened in the years 1988 and 1992.
In June, Fiom received a report from someone who thought he was a child of Ruis. According to Nij Geertgen, an investigation revealed that Ruis had used his own sperm during inseminations. The former gynaecologist then provided his DNA to the FIOM database. That resulted in two more matches.
‘Right to own history’
“Every person has the right to his own history,” Ruis explains. “I realize very well that many people want to know that history. That is why I have fully cooperated with the FIOM to give people the opportunity to start an investigation. I would say: when in doubt, start a search through the FIOM.”
Ruis also responds to the story in the Volkskrant. There he says it was “a total surprise”. According to him, there was no intent, but his semen got mixed with the semen of the intended father, or was accidentally mixed up. His semen was in the lab “to improve the freezing procedure,” he says, according to the paper.
Liduina and Saint Joseph
Gynecologist Ruis worked at the Liduina Hospital in Boxtel, now part of the Jeroen Bosch Hospital. Until 2005 he worked at the Sint Joseph Hospital in Veghel (now part of Bernhoven), with his own practice that was named Stichting Geertgen.
From 2008 the foundation was located in Elsendorp and in 2014 the organization continued under the name Nij Geertgen after bankruptcy.
