Tom Mickel is back at HSV: The 36-year-old will be coordinator of the transition area for the youth team. The newcomer said he should closely accompany the youth players who are on the threshold of becoming professionals. Last summer, Mickel ended his career after a total of 16 professional years – 12 of which the goalkeeper spent at HSV.

Loic Fave, professional assistant coach and head of sport in the youth performance center, explained: “Tom has defined himself as an active professional through hard work, ambition and team spirit. He should now bring exactly these values as a close companion to our players in the transition area.” While still an active professional, Mickel carried out this task “excellently” last season with Fabio Balde and Otto Stange.

HSV veteran Mickel said: “Our aim must be that the best boys in their year wear the diamond on their chest and that we prepare them optimally for their future professional careers at HSV.”

Moderator Laura Wontorra has a surprising sympathy for football: Although the native of Bremen is an avowed Werder fan, she wants HSV to stay in the league. “There must also be a northern derby in the future. That simply belongs in the Bundesliga,” said the 36-year-old to the “Hamburger Abendblatt”.

Wontorra, who is now one of the most sought-after presenters on German television, commutes between sports and entertainment programs – for example for DAZN, RTL and VOX. She is also always drawn to the Elbe in her private life. “My best friend since fifth grade lives in Hamburg,” she continued to tell the “Abendblatt”. During her visits she can also be seen at the Volksparkstadion – despite the club rivalry.

It could be difficult in today’s game (3:30 p.m./Sky): Hamburger SV wants to stop the Champions League participant’s impressive streak at RB Leipzig. Leipzig has been unbeaten in duels with promoted teams for 37 games (32 wins, five draws). However, HSV arrives with a tailwind – the “Rothosen” got seven points from the last three games.
