Masi was sacked in February after his crucial role in last season’s final race in which Max Verstappen became world champion. Masi has since worked in another position at the FIA.
During the final race of 2021, the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, Masi decided after a crash to remove all stragglers between leader Lewis Hamilton (Mercedes) and Verstappen (Red Bull) and give the duo one more lap to race. The Dutchman took maximum advantage of his fresh tires and overtook Hamilton, so that not the Briton but Verstappen became world champion. Masi’s decision led to great dissatisfaction at Mercedes.
