Sad news from the football world. Former player Marien Willemsen has passed away. The Amsterdammer, who played for Telstar and AFC, among others, suffered from cancer.
Willemsen went through the youth of AZ. It did not come to a debut in the first team, but in 2006 he broke through at Telstar. There he played almost a hundred matches in the first division before he left for FC Omniworld (later Almere City). Via Spakenburg he ended up at AFC in the second division in 2013. Willemsen played five seasons with the team from Amsterdam until he put an end to his career in 2018. With Spakenburg (2012) and AFC (2014) he became champion in the top class.
Last week, Willemsen was heartened at the match between his two old clubs. In the duel between Spakenburg and AFC, everyone clapped in the second minute, referring to his back number.
