Former football coach Gerd Schädlich died

Chemnitz (dpa) – German football mourns the loss of Gerd Schädlich. The long-time coach, who had worked for FSV Zwickau, Erzgebirge Aue and Chemnitzer FC, among others, died on Saturday night at the age of 69, as the CFC announced, citing Schädlich’s family.

“It is incredibly sad and so difficult to find words at the moment or to grasp the scope for us,” said Chemnitz CEO Romy Polster. “Today we lost a really great footballer, person and friend.”

As a player, Schädlich was active in the 1970s, particularly for FC Karl-Marx-Stadt before he had to end his career due to injury problems. As a coach, his path led, among other things, via Riesa, Zwickau and Aue to Chemnitz, where he took over the coaching position from the 2008/09 season. After promotion to the 3rd division in 2011, Schädlich resigned from his position in October 2013. “Gerd, we will miss you. We will miss you endlessly!” Wrote the CFC.
