Youri Petrov passed away yesterday. The 48-year-old former striker played for FC Volendam between 2006 and 2008. After his professional career, he continued to live in the Netherlands and struggled with a major drinking problem. That ultimately killed him.
After employment at RKC Waalwijk, FC Twente, ADO Den Haag, among others, Youri Petrov settled in 2006 at FC Volendam. He played 26 games in two years for the Eel farmers. The Ukrainian scored twice and provided one assist. Petrov became champion in the first division in his last season, but did not experience promotion a year later.
His contract was not extended at Volendam. Then he left for ASWH. During his career, Petrov already had a major drinking problem. He was fired from FC Twente in 1997 after repeated problems with alcohol. That eventually became fatal to him and he died on Saturday in a Dutch hospice.
