Former FC Bayern: penalty against Ribéry club lifted

The appeals court of the Italian football association FIGC has overturned the point deduction for Salernitana Calcio, Franck Ribéry’s club, which played for Bayern Munich for many years.

The club had three points deducted because it had not traveled to Udine for the league game on December 21 due to numerous corona cases in the squad. Salernitana had been banned from traveling by the local health authorities.

However, the league refused to postpone the game because the club still had enough players in the squad, the argument went. A sports judge then rejected an appeal from Salernitana. The game was rated 0:3 from Salernitana’s point of view.

In addition, Salernitana was deducted a point for not appearing. The Court of Appeal saw the situation differently and upheld Salernitana’s objection. The game against Udinese should now be rescheduled.

Bottom of the table Salernitana now has 13 instead of 12 points after 23 games. Udine are now three points down and have slipped one place to 15th in the table with 24 points.

Salernitana fired his coach Stefano Colantuono on Monday evening. Fabio Liverani, who last coached Parma Calcio, and the clubless Claudio Ranieri are considered successor candidates.

Ex-Juventus coach Andrea Pirlo is also a candidate. Salernitana was acquired in January by entrepreneur Danilo Iervolino, who is now president of the southern Italian club.
