Former employees: Meta, Google & Co. apparently provided thousands for "fake"-Work on

“There is nothing for these people to do – the work is just fake […] what are these people doing? They sit in meetings.” With these words, Business Insider quoted OpenStore CEO Keith Rabois, who is also known as part of the so-called PayPal mafia. As Fortune and Business Insider report, Rabois met Meta, Google & Co. at a banking event publicly accused of hiring thousands of people to artificially keep headcount high and deprive the competition of good workers, leaving employees sitting in the office with nothing to do.

This was also confirmed by former Meta employee Brit Levy on her TikTok account. She was hired along with many others as part of a diversity program and was asked to fill out a survey on diversity in the company on her third day at work.

Then she wasn’t given any work. “So I was one of those guys who got hired for a very weird job,” Levy says. She was divided into a group with people who had not worked. “I mean, we just sat around. We kind of had to fight to get something to do. It was a very strange work environment and it kind of felt like Meta was just hiring so other companies wouldn’t get us “Levy continues.

The problem: the employees are now not progressing in their careers

“It’s not really like being paid to do nothing. You’re being paid to freeze your career. You’re being paid a temporary salary that may limit your earning potential forever. Many employees have turned down other good offers or left good jobs to being able to work at Meta – and then we ended up in these jobs,” Levy said angrily. At the company, she met people who hadn’t really worked for years. Meta did not respond to a request for comment, Fortune said.

Not only Rabois and Levy accuse Meta & Co. of hiring people without having work for them – other executives from other companies also pointed out problems in this regard. For example, Marc Andreessen from Andreessen Horowitz wrote on Twitter that good large companies have twice as many employees as actually needed, while bad large companies have four times as many employees as actually needed.

According to Business Insider, Rabois is proposing to end the staffing strategy attributed to Meta & Co. by paying more attention to revenue in relation to the number of employees. Such a parameter for evaluating companies would make hiring employees who then have no work less attractive.
