Former cyclist and café owner Boudewijn Devos immortalized in a mural

The artwork can be seen on the facade of his son Patrick’s house. In the artwork ‘Boudewijn & Devos’, the young cycling champion stands arm in arm with his older self. “Central to the design is his smile, which should welcome passers-by in Wielsbeke,” the municipality said.

Cafe The Sports Friend

Boudewijn Devos was a talented youth cyclist. As a professional he took part in various races such as The Tour of Morocco and The Omloop van de Grensstreek Mouscron. He also won the latter. After he hooked up his bicycle in 1957, he started a cafe and bicycle shop on the Heirweg.

Café De Sportvriend became a household name in the wider area – just like Boudewijn Devos himself. The cafe was demolished at the end of 2020 – three years after his death – to make the intersection safer.
