Almost ten years after his departure, Rafal Gikiewicz is moving back to Poland. The 36-year-old goalkeeper signed a contract with Widzew Lodz on Tuesday until the end of the season with an option for an extension. The transfer window in the Ekstraklasa is open until February 27th.
Gikiewicz was most recently under contract with MKE Ankaragücü in Turkey, but lost his regular place to Bahadır Güngördü (28) after seven appearances at the start of the season. The engagement, which was originally planned to last until the summer, was ended prematurely at the beginning of February.

In Lodz, Gikiewicz can hope to play in the Ekstraklasa for the first time since 2013/14. At that time he was recommended by Slask Wroclaw for a move to Eintracht Braunschweig. The goalkeeper played a total of 226 games in the 1st and 2nd Bundesliga for Lower Saxony, SC Freiburg, Union Berlin and FC Augsburg. At his future club he will meet an old acquaintance in Sebastian Kerk (29), both of whom briefly played together for Freiburg at the beginning of the 2016/17 season.
