Former Bundesliga coach André Breitenreiter takes over Huddersfield Town

André Breitenreiter has found a new job a year after leaving TSG Hoffenheim. The 50-year-old takes over as coach at Huddersfield Town. The 50-year-old signed a contract with the Championship club until 2026.

While Breitenreiter’s visa matters are expected to be clarified over the course of the week, interim coach Jon Worthington will look after the team in the upcoming home game against Hull City on Saturday (5 p.m.). Huddersfield is currently in 20th place, five points clear of the relegation zone. At the end of January, the club parted ways with Darren Moore after just one win in twelve games.

Breitenreiter is the third German coach at Huddersfield after David Wagner and Jan Siewert and was recently discussed as a possible successor to Tim Walter at Hamburger SV; he had previously turned down Besiktas. After stints in the Bundesliga with SC Paderborn 07, FC Schalke 04 and Hannover 96, Breitenreiter won the Swiss championship with FC Zurich in 2022.

“André was someone we really wanted to talk to at an early stage in our search. His achievements as a head coach are undisputed. He celebrated titles and promotions in Germany and Switzerland with various clubs,” said sporting director Mark Cartwright. “His football philosophy is exactly what we are looking for in our next head coach and when we started talking about this opportunity his confidence in his methods was very clear. He is determined to show that his qualities work as a head coach in England (…). We believe André has the skills to have a positive impact on our team in the remaining games this season and that together we can build something really exciting for our fans in the future.”
