Alec John Such, a founding member and former bassist of the band Bon Jovi, has died at the age of 70. His former band members announced the news on Twitter on Sunday. A cause of death has not been shared.
“Our hearts are broken by the news of the death of our good friend Alec John Such,” the American rock group said. ,,Alec had a very important role in forming the band. To be honest, we found each other because of him.”
The musician was a childhood friend of drummer Tico Torres and he once invited Richie Sambora, later Bon Jovi’s guitarist, to a performance. Memories of Such bring a “smile on their faces and tears to their eyes” for the band members, according to the group. “We will miss him very much.”
Burnt-out
Such was in Bon Jovi from 1983 to 1994 and played on hits like Livin’ on a prayer. The bassist thought it was getting too much and felt “burnt out”, he said in an interview with the newspaper Asbury Park Press in 2000. “It felt like work and I didn’t want to work. The reason I ever wanted to be in a band was because I didn’t want to work.”
Such briefly returned to the band in 2018, when Bon Jovi was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
