The situation with the forest fire near Frohnsdorf near Treuenbrietzen (Potsdam-Mittelmark) is stable.
The fire is currently contained on 43 hectares, said Kai-Uwe Schwinzert, spokesman for the Potsdam-Mittelmark district, on Saturday on request. So far, no further extensions of the fire had to be registered. “But it’s still hot and there’s a lot of smoke,” he said.
Be careful that wind will pick up in the afternoon and flames will be fanned again. According to Schwinzert, people from the surrounding areas are not in danger.
According to Raimund Engel, forest fire protection officer for the state of Brandenburg, the forest had burned on around 60 hectares on Friday.
Two fire protection units from the Havelland and Elbe-Elster districts have been on site since the morning to relieve the regional firefighters. Firefighting helicopters are expected.
The extinguishing work is made more difficult because the forest area is also an area suspected of being explosive ordnance. On Saturday, the highest forest fire danger level of 5 applied in all districts in Brandenburg.
In 2018, around 400 hectares of forest were destroyed in a forest fire in Treuenbrietzen. Flames raged in the forest southwest of Berlin for several days. Due to the major fire, more than 500 people had to leave the villages of Frohnsdorf, Klausdorf and Tiefenbrunnen.
