Foreign tourists find their way to the Netherlands again: last year 16 million guests from other countries | Economy

The number of guests who stayed in Dutch hotels, apartments and bungalow parks last year rose by 40 percent to 44 million. This means that the sector is almost back to the level it was before the outbreak of the corona pandemic, Statistics Netherlands (CBS) reports on the basis of new, provisional figures.

Dutch overnight accommodations mainly received more foreign guests. The number of guests staying overnight in hotels also increased. Tourists who stayed in Dutch overnight accommodations in 2022 spent a total of 127.8 million nights there, an increase of 26 percent compared to a year earlier and 4 percent more than in 2019, the year with the most overnight stays so far.

The figures also show that 28 million tourists spent the night in Dutch hotels last year, a growth of 60 percent compared to a year earlier, but slightly below the level of 2019, the year before corona.

Nearly 10 million guests stayed on sites with bungalows or mobile homes, for example, and campsites attracted almost 5 million. Compared to a year earlier, this was an increase of 11 and 13 percent. As a result, cottage grounds and campsites attracted more guests than in 2019. Group accommodations received 1.5 million guests last year, 66 percent more than in 2021.

Foreign guests

The number of foreign guests rose in 2022 compared to a year earlier by 150 percent to 16 million. That is still below the level of 2019. Cottage grounds recorded a growth of 121 percent, for hotels that was 166 percent. In addition to the number of foreign guests, hotels and group accommodations also saw the number of Dutch guests grow last year.

Campsites and cottage areas, on the other hand, reported a decrease in the number of domestic guests. However, these accommodations still received more Dutch guests than before the corona crisis. The number of guests who spent the night in overnight accommodations grew in all provinces in 2022.

Regional differences

The growth was greatest in North Holland and the smallest in Zeeland. Also compared to 2019, most provinces received more guests in overnight accommodations. Especially in North Holland and Groningen, the number of guests was lower than in the last year before corona.

Last week, ABN Amro released a report showing that the hotel sector can look forward to a good year. The occupancy rate, the room rate and the revenue per available room are on the rise. Belvilla also expects holiday homes to have a good year. For the Easter weekend, it sees a growth in the total number of bookings of 7.2 percent compared to 2022. The bookings from abroad show that Germany is the leader: Germans are responsible for 55.7 percent of the total number of bookings in the Netherlands. Belgium accounts for 6 percent of bookings in the Netherlands.
