For whom the streaming service DAZN is worthwhile

Whether Bundesliga, Formula 1 or basketball: In the past, there was no way around Sky for live sports. There is now an interesting alternative with DAZN. But what can the streaming service do and for whom is the offer particularly worthwhile?

In addition to exclusive films and series, sport is still the main reason why viewers opt for a pay TV or streaming subscription. But here, too, the choice becomes more complicated. In principle, all the important sports highlights used to be on Sky, but with DAZN this has changed, especially in the field of football. But what do you actually get for your money with DAZN and is the subscription worth it in the price-performance ratio to Sky? TECHBOOK took a closer look at the popular streaming service.

There is to see

The football highlights are all Friday and Sunday Bundesliga games and almost the entire Champions League. In addition to games with German participation, DAZN also advertises games from other international leagues, including the Spanish LaLiga and Serie A. Away from football, fans of American football (NFL), the UFC and the wrestling league WWE in particular get their money’s worth. For example, the well-known “RedZone” runs on DAZN, which runs through all NFL games that run parallel on Sundays.

In addition, there are also many other sports such as tennis, darts, baseball and cycling in the program. Despite everything, leafing through the catalog makes it clear that DAZN clearly focuses on international professional football leagues. If you are interested in amateur or fringe sports, you are probably at the wrong address with this streamer. The offer is available live and on demand in HD resolution.

Here is a list of all available sports:

  • Football (Bundesliga, CHampions League, Serie A, LaLiga, Ligue 1, UEFA Women’s Champions League, Coppa Italia and many more)
  • Basketball (NBA, NCAA college basketball)
  • American Football (NFL, NFL Network, NFL RedZone, NFL ENDZN, NCAA College Football)
  • Darts (WM, Premier League Darts, World Matchplay and much more)
  • Motorsport (MotoGP, Moto2, Moto3, MotoE)
  • MMA (UFC)
  • Boxing (Matchroom Boxing, Golden Boy Boxing)
  • Handball (EHF Champions League, EHF European Cup, EHF European League)
  • WWE (WWE SmackDown, WWE Raw)
  • Hockey (FIH Pro League)
  • Tennis (Australian Open, US Open, French Open – via Eurosport)
  • Cycling (Tour de France, Vuealta Espana – via Eurosport)

Prices at DAZN

Some time ago, DAZN raised the prices significantly. There are now three different subscription packages in total, whereby you can choose between annual and monthly contracts. In the cheapest variant, a one-off payment of 274.99 euros is incurred in the annual contract, which, according to DAZN, corresponds to a total saving of 84.88 euros. Annual membership with monthly billing costs EUR 24.99, which corresponds to savings of EUR 60 per year. If you want to get out of the contract at the end of the month, you pay 29.99 euros. This is also the most expensive option to join DAZN. For comparison: The Sky Supersport monthly ticket is priced at the same level, but is particularly interesting for Formula 1 fans.

Pros and cons of a subscription

The biggest disadvantage of DAZN is clearly that it is a streaming offer. And this brings with it some technical disadvantages. The signal propagation time for live transmissions tends to be slower than, for example, via linear distribution channels such as satellite, antenna or cable connection. In the past, there have always been complaints about live signal breaks or other transmission disruptions at Sky. Unfortunately, fast broadband connections are still not available everywhere in Germany. With cable internet, several viewers on the same street have to share the bandwidth, which can also lead to problems.

Despite these disadvantages, DAZN offers an almost unbeatably wide range of sports, which does not exist in linear television, for example. For real sports fans, the corresponding subscription is therefore definitely worthwhile, and a change could also be worthwhile for Sky customers, depending on their interest in a specific sport.

Conclusion: For whom is DAZN worthwhile?

So now the answer to the question asked at the beginning: For whom is DAZN really worthwhile? Above all, real football fans of the German and European leagues and NFL watchers will find a lot of interesting content on DAZN. Unfortunately, there are currently no advertising-financed or at least cheaper alternatives to premium offers from Sky or DAZN, apart from broadcasts on Amazon Prime or live games on the radio. There are more exotic league broadcasts, at least with the new streaming service of the world football association FIFA, which was only launched a short time ago. However, don’t expect the Bundesliga, Serie A or Premier League there.

If you absolutely don’t want to spend any money on the Bundesliga & Co., the only option left is to go to one of the many Sky bars. Or you can simply share the subscription price with friends and relatives and watch together, which is more fun anyway. It should only be noted that account sharing is prohibited at DAZN. But watching live sport together is much nicer anyway!
