RB Leipzig has been unbeaten in the Bundesliga for two months. Werder Bremen couldn’t do anything to change that either. But it was close.
Leipzig won 2-1 (1-0) at Werder Bremen on Saturday (November 12th, 2022). André Silva gave RB the lead in the 13th minute before Bremen’s Christian Groß (57th) equalized. Xaver Schlager scored the winning goal for Leipzig (71st).
In the table, Leipzig climbs to second place for at least one night after their fourth league win in a row and is Bayern’s first pursuer with 28 points. In general, things are going well for RB, which apparently has a lot to do with coach Marco Rose. Rose has been in Leipzig for two months, and his team has won seven out of ten league games during this time and lost only once.
Newly promoted Werder Bremen ended the football year despite the defeat with 21 points in a very respectable ninth place in the table.
André Silva completes the lead
Leipzig’s lead fell after less than 15 minutes when Bremen’s Anthony Jung lost the ball on the left near the center line. The ball landed at Leipzig’s Emil Forsberg, who quickly moved towards the penalty area, but then played out to Silva on the left. And André Silva looked once, then he flicked the ball flat into the far corner.
For André Silva, 27, it was only the second goal of the season in the Bundesliga, and yet it was the second piece of good news in just a few days. At the World Cup finals in Qatar, André Silva will be in the Portuguese squad, we know that now.
Bremen also has chances, but does not score at first
Werder, on the other hand, rarely became dangerous from the game. Niclas Füllkrug, who has just been nominated for the World Cup by national coach Hans-Dieter Flick, had the best opportunity. However, after a standard situation from close range, Füllkrug was denied by Leipzig goalkeeper Janis Blaswich, who reacted strongly (22′).
Bremen improved during the first half and had another chance to equalize through Leonardo Bittencourt (42′).
Big meets beautiful
In the second half, the equalizer actually fell, only the goal scorer was a surprising one. Christian Groß, 33, is actually a man for the duels in Bremen’s midfield and not for the spectacular. But this time he was responsible for the spectacle.
Groß hit the right corner with a shot from almost 14 meters, opponent Willi Orban had deflected the ball slightly. For Groß it was an afternoon of anniversaries: Bundesliga game number 50 – and then the first goal.
Schlager provides the final point
Nevertheless, Bremen couldn’t be happy about winning a point, and that had a lot to do with a Portuguese heel and with Xaver Schlager. André Silva refined a pass from Forsberg right into Schlager’s run, who scored the 2-1 winner.
Leipzig asks for the top game
After the World Cup and the winter break, Leipzig will host the record champions from Munich (Friday, January 20th, 2023 at 8:30 p.m.). A day later Bremen is challenged away in Cologne (6.30 p.m.).
