For the third year in a row, tornado outbreak sows destruction in December: how exceptional is this for the US?

Last weekend, several strong thunderstorms accompanied by tornadoes passed through the American state of Tennessee. These left an extensive trail of destruction. At least 6 people lost their lives and at least 23 people were seriously injured by the storm. This is now the third year in a row that there has been a tornado outbreak in the United States in December. But how unusual are tornadoes this late in the year? How powerful are these winter tornadoes? And can we expect more in the future? Weather and climate expert Samuel Helsen explains.
