For the first time since Thurau in 1983: Buchmann at the Giro on the top ten course – Giro d’Italia – cycling

Ciccone wins 15th stage

Buchmann reached the finish on Sunday (May 22nd, 2022) after 177 kilometers in the group of favorites. That puts him two minutes behind leader and Olympic champion Richard Carapaz from Ecuador. The Australian Hindley is only nine seconds short of the pink jersey. The 15th stage was won by the Italian Giulio Ciccone single-handedly ahead of the Colombian escapee Santiago Buitrago. The group of favorites reaches the finish almost eight minutes later.

Fit again after bronchitis – and still in the running

Buchmann’s trump card is only now coming. In the third week, the 29-year-old wanted to be in top form after bronchitis had knocked him out of step during preparation. Anything is still possible on four mountain stages.

On Saturday, Buchmann’s Bora-hansgrohe team caused major changes in the overall standings with a strong team performance. Carapaz took over the pink jersey from the Spaniard Juan Pedro Lopez, but Hindley is breathing down his neck.

German team satisfied

“It’s great for the team’s self-confidence. The fact that they saw when we started an action that we could get other teams into trouble,” said Jens Zemke, sporting director for Bora. In any case, the Giro is running as desired for the German team. Lennard Kämna with his triumph on Mount Etna and Hindley have already secured two stage wins.

So it fits into the picture that Tour de France stage winner Nils Politt celebrated a home win on Sunday at the 105th edition of Rund um Köln. With eight victories in the past five weeks, the Bora team has made the weak spring, which was affected by many diseases, forgotten.

After the rest day on Monday, the last Giro week will start with the 16th stage on Tuesday over 202 kilometers from Salo to Aprica. There are three mountains of the first category to be conquered.
