For Merel, a budget coach is much more than just practical support

A high energy bill, screeching inflation and therefore sharply rising prices; more and more people are becoming the victims of the purchasing power crisis. How do they make ends meet? We have been following two Amsterdammers in their daily lives for several weeks now. This week Merel from Amsterdam-Noord receives a visit from Deborah, who helps her with the housekeeping book.

The beginning of the month follows a fixed pattern for Merel. First pay the fixed costs. Then food and grit for cat Mungo. “And what’s left is for myself, for food and any other expenses.” Not that there have been many of those lately. “I’m already happy that I can get the food done.”

debt free

Her tight budget leaves little room for unexpected setbacks, such as a visit to the dentist or a bicycle repair. One unexpected bill can turn Merel’s life upside down. “But I want to stay debt-free at all costs.” Because Merel knows: that is a pitfall from which escape is extremely difficult.

That is why she enlisted the help of a budget coach via Deacony North. Deborah helps her put things in order, but is also a mental boost. And that is just as important, says Deborah. “People who get into debt only ask for help after five years on average. Finance is often a very mental point, which can ask a lot of you.” So now she sees no increase in the debt problem – it is still largely hidden.

Mental support

For Merel, Deborah is more than just an assistant in her financial household – she is a loyal mental support. Merel: “The feeling that you have a backup, to be supported and adjusted for a while.”

So far, Merel has managed to stay debt free. She is not afraid of what bills may fall on the mat next week. “We’ll mess around again!”
