For Damon Albarn, the Arctic Monkeys are the last great guitar band

The “Blur” singer shares his take on modern guitar music and says he’s passionate about Arctic Monkeys.

During an interview with the Broken Record podcast, Damon Alburn revealed that modern guitar music has become pretty “sterile.” With one exception: the Arctic Monkeys.

“For me, the Arctic Monkeys are the last great guitar band and I don’t know if anything as good has happened since then,” says the Blur singer.

In his opinion, guitar music has gone through a difficult period in which it first had to dissect itself in order to reinvent itself. However, this makes him optimistic for the future. There are “fantastic new mutations” of the genre and many up-and-coming bands are showing great potential for a revival. He has three acts in particular in mind to look out for in the future: Wu-Lu, Yard Act and the Sleaford Mods.

“It’s going back to using deeper language, not that generic rock stuff – I hate that,” he added. “I like poets and guitars.”

Blur themselves will release their ninth studio album THE BALLAD OF DARREN on July 21st, followed by an exclusive gig in London on July 25th, where the new record will be played once from start to finish.
