An Indian company launches a quiet, cheap and portable wind turbine

Domestic wind energy, that is, that which is installed in private homes for residential use, continues to lag considerably behind photovoltaic energy. And yet, technological advances are making giant strides in windmills as well, with devices becoming smaller, cheaper and easier to use. Now an Indian company has launched a turbine that, from about 1,100 euros (the price of an iPhone 13), can solve the lack of electricity in isolated houses.

The Indian startup Avant Garde Innovations has designed and developed a low cost wind turbine, called Avatar, which can generate 3-5 kWh of electricity per day. It is a small wind turbine suitable for residential, commercial and agricultural areas, which is already available on its website.

And it is that many areas of India are still in the dark, without access to the commercial power grid. For a large part of the Indian population, electricity today remains a distant dream.

But two brothers want to make this energy crisis in India a thing of the past. They have developed a new solution to bring renewable electricity to homes, eliminating energy poverty.

Avant Garde Innovations, the startup founded by brothers Arun and Anoop George from Kerala, has developed a low-cost wind turbine that can generate Enough electricity to power an entire house for a lifetime.

About the size of a ceiling fan, this turbine can generate up to 5 kWh per day, with average winds of 5.5 m/s. Prices range from approximately $1,100 for its most basic model (equivalent to 1 kWh) to $5,790 for the 5 kWh Avatar V version.

This is a really modest investment compared to the benefits that this device can bring, which, on the other hand, is quieter even than the wind itselfaccording to the company’s website.

This wind turbine is a huge opportunity. India is the sixth largest consumer of energy in the world, 3.4% of global energy consumption. The federal governments in India, as well as the central government, are unable to support the huge investment in infrastructure needed to bring electricity to the most remote villages. The company launched its pilot project in a church in the city of Thiruvananthapuram in january this year and they are already available even for shipping abroad through their website.

The Avatar wind turbine was chosen by the UN as one of the 20 main technical advances at the United Nations Innovation Summit that took place that year in India and was selected from among 200 projects.
