Footballer kicks opponent unconscious: four months in jail

A 28-year-old man from Den Bosch will go to prison for four months because he kicked another player unconscious during a football match. According to the court in Arnhem, there is no place for violence on a football field and the player of SV CHC is guilty of serious assault. He must also pay the victim compensation of more than 9,000 euros.

The assault took place in Tiel at the end of November 2021. The perpetrator’s team, the third team of the Bossche club, played against the second team of RKTVC. The victim was 20 at the time.

With straight leg
The perpetrator had been ejected earlier in the game. When a brawl ensued later during the game, he ran into the field. He jumped with both legs against the victim’s back. According to the judge, that man tried to get up just at that moment after an earlier fall and he did not see the CHC’er coming. The victim was hit hard in the neck and head area.

The home team player suffered a concussion and collapsed unconscious. Since then, De Gelderlander has suffered from memory loss, forgetfulness and sleep disorders and was traumatized. He was unable to work for months and a year and a half later he is still physically affected by what happened to him.

three years’ probationary period
The court concludes that the inhabitant of Den Bosch does not feel guilty at all. Although camera images indicate the opposite, in the eyes of the judge he continues to maintain that he only pushed to break up the parties. If he goes wrong again in the next three years, the inhabitant of Den Bosch will go to jail for another five months.

The public prosecutor also found that there was serious abuse and thought six months in prison was an appropriate sentence. The compensation that the inhabitant of Den Bosch would have to pay, 6,000 euros, was lower.
