The entire football world sympathizes with Vanity Lewerissa. The football player from Maastricht was diagnosed with breast cancer a few weeks ago.

Lieke Martens and her former club Ajax have expressed their support via social media.

Huge hit
The news was announced on Monday afternoon by her current club, Standard Liège. “It goes without saying that this news transcends the sporting aspect and that this news has affected the entire group enormously,” the club said on the website. Former teammate at the Orange Women, Lieke Martens, shared a photo in which she wishes Lewerissa strength. Other players also expressed their support, as did various clubs from both Belgium and the Netherlands.

Lewerissa herself has already responded on Instagram. “A path that you would rather not walk in your life. We are going for it, with two legs stretched out.”

European champion
The 30-year-old Lewerissa started her professional career at VVV-Venlo. After that she played for Standard Liège, PSV and Ajax. Last summer she returned to Belgium. Lewerissa became European champion in 2017 with the Orange Lionesses. In addition to her football career at Standard Liège, she has been active in Maastricht since last summer, where she wants to raise the level of women’s football.
