Apparently nine people were injured, but their lives are not in danger. The English team is not yet in Missouri.
Nine people were apparently injured in a shooting relatively close to the England team headquarters for the World Cup early Saturday morning. The Athletic and The Independent reported this unanimously on Sunday. The police were alerted around 4 a.m. on Troost Avenue in Kansas City, Missouri. Those affected went to nearby hospitals, but no one was seriously injured.
Suspects are not yet in custody, both newspapers report, citing the Kansas City Police Department. The crime scene is about seven kilometers from the Swope Soccer Village, the quarters that the English team led by coach Thomas Tuchel will move into for the tournament. The team is still preparing for the World Cup in Florida, where they won against New Zealand (1-0) in Tampa on Saturday.
England will test against Costa Rica in Orlando on Wednesday and then travel to Kansas City. England will play their first group game at the World Cup in the USA, Canada and Mexico on June 17th against Croatia.
Given its central location in the United States, Kansas City is a popular headquarters for teams. In addition to England, world champions Argentina and the teams from Algeria and the Netherlands are also setting up camp there.
