Football star Kika van Es is not going to the World Cup after all

In May she announced that she would quit professional football to focus on her private life, but Kika van Es still ended up in the pre-selection of the Orange squad for the World Cup. Now national coach Andries Jonker has decided not to take the Boxmeerse with him and her career with the Orange will end.

The 31-year-old Van Es, who played for PSV last season, played fourteen seasons at the highest level. In May of this year she announced in a message on the website of ‘her’ PSV that she was going to stop. “It’s the best choice, but it’s never a nice decision after such a career.”

World Cup as the last trick
This year’s Women’s World Cup will be held in Australia and New Zealand. Because Van Es was still included in the pre-selection, there seemed to be a chance that the World Cup would be her last football trick.

But Andries Jonker decided to leave Kika van Es and Tiny Hoekstra at home. The two are replaced by Dominique Janssen and Lineth Beerensteyn. This also puts a definite end to Van Es’s career with the Orange Lionesses, with whom she became European champion in 2017.

The World Cup starts on July 20.
