football | Serie A: Italy decides playoffs in case of a tie

As of: 06/28/2022 9:07 p.m

The football championship in Italy could be decided in a new way in the future. The Italian federation FIGC decided on Tuesday (28.0622) that the title in Serie A will be played in playoffs from the coming season if two teams end the season with the same number of points at the top.

FIGC boss Gabriele Gravina had said several times in the past that he would like to decide every title like this. The “Scudetto” was last awarded in a decision game in 1964. At that time, FC Bologna and Inter Milan were tied in first and second place after 34 games. Bologna won the “final” 2-0.

AC Milan became Serie A champions last season – two points clear of local rivals Inter.
