Football : Sanctions against FC Alianza after mass panic in El Salvador

After a stampede that killed 12 people at a football stadium in El Salvador, the national football association has imposed sanctions on Alianza FC.

The games of the first division team in the Cuscatlán stadium in the capital San Salvador will take place behind closed doors for a year, according to the Central American country’s football association.

The club have been accused of taking insufficient and unreasonable security precautions before and during the incident in the quarter-final second leg against CD FAS. Alianza was also fined $30,000 (around €28,000). As a further sanction, the association awarded Fesfut victory in the game CD FAS.

According to police information, the panic broke out when fans tried to get into the stadium. Among other things, it is also examined whether too many tickets have been sold or whether tickets have been counterfeited. Around 100 people were taken to hospitals with injuries.
