Zurich (dpa) – The football rulers have spoken out in favor of five substitutions per team and game being permanently possible in the future.
The regulation was originally introduced because of the corona pandemic to relieve the players with a view to the tightly packed calendar. The change still has to be ratified at the annual general meeting of the International Football Association Board (IFAB), which was postponed to a later and not yet fixed date due to the Ukraine war.
However, the leagues or associations reserve the right to apply the regulation. The Premier League has returned to the old procedure with three substitutions, which Liverpool coach Jürgen Klopp, for example, criticizes and refers to the high burden. The smaller clubs in particular were against five substitutions because they saw it as an advantage for the top clubs. In the Bundesliga, the regulation was introduced and retained immediately after the restart after the Corona break.
