Football podcast | ‘Willem II seemed to have things in order for years’ | Dutch football

Unrest in Tilburg where the technical director and the trainer were fired. Uncertainty in Arnhem about the future. Disturbances in the Dutch stadiums. And white smoke from the Kuip about the future of Frank Arnesen. Etienne Verhoeff discusses the football news of the day with Sjoerd Mossou.

Bijltjesdag in Tilburg aroused surprise at the columnist of the AD. ,,Willem II was always the club that got things right. If you come from Breda, you looked a bit jealous at that. They reached European football just before corona. They got it right at the top. An experienced general manager with Van Geel, Mathijsen as a young up and coming technical director. In terms of trainers, they had it right. Everyone also thought Fred Grim was a perfectly logical choice. And all of a sudden, bang-boom, everything collapses.”

They will find a new trainer in Tilburg. In fact, according to Mossou, they are queuing up to take it over. But it is not so easy to find a new technical director. ,,The departure of Joris Mathijsen is more remarkable than the departure of Grim. You can say that he has not put together a good roster for the trainer. Not at the beginning of the season and not halfway through. But the conditions seemed ideal beforehand.”

KNVB

They also continue on the disturbances in the stadiums lately. Paul Depla, mayor of Breda, spoke out about this. Depla also missed a statement from the KNVB. “I agreed with that. The KNVB excelled in absence. You expect more leadership and for the union to say that it cannot continue like this. It’s really worrying what’s happening in the stadiums.”
