The football players of Germany have won their first match of the European title in England. At the Brentford Community Stadium in London, national team coach Martina Voss-Tecklenburg defeated Denmark 4-0.
Lina Magull gave Germany the lead after more than 20 minutes. Lea Schüller made it 2-0 after almost an hour. In the final phase, Lena Lattwein scored the third goal. Alexandra Popp then also scored, 4-0.
Spain had started the tournament in the same group earlier in the day in Milton Keynes with a 4-1 win over Finland. Linda Sällström gave Finland the lead after just one minute. Spain recovered with hits from Irene Paredes, Aitana Bonmatí, Lucía García and Mariona Caldentey. The latter converted a penalty in injury time.
The Spanish football players miss Alexia Putellas. The star player of FC Barcelona, who received the Ballon d’Or (Golden Ball) with the women last year, suffered a serious knee injury during a training session earlier in the week.
The Orange squad will play its first game on Saturday. The first opponent is Sweden.
