Get rid of the rust, quick. The first week NFL dampened the enthusiasm of the fans who had been waiting for the return of the oval ball for months, often offering modest shows. But there is. And at least there have been many games pulled to the end, including Monday Night, won by Seattle over Denver 17-16 on the day of Russell Wilson’s great return from ex. One game less than the preseason, where by now the owners hardly play anymore, it makes itself felt.

It was a nightmare Sunday for kickers. Steelers-Bengals played “ciapa no” (At least, Ass’ e mazza, Busche, Carcarazzu, Perdino, Piloffio, Rovescino, Solino, Tressette to lose, Storto, if you prefer, depending on your geographical location). Finally, the strange day of the Chiefs kicker, Harrison Butker, who twisted an ankle on the kickoff, forcing safety Justin Reid to kick two extra points in his place (one of which hit), before returning, limping, and put in, without running, a kick from 54.

Here too we have seen all the colors. Joe Burrow who throws 4 interceptions and loses one of the two fumbles committed by sinking the Bengals. Derek Carr (3 int) doing the same for the Raiders against the Chargers. Lamar Jackson who silences the critics by throwing 3 passes in the goal from 25, 17 and 55 yards. So he doesn’t just know how to run. Even if we wait for him at the gate against defenses other than that of the Jets. Brady played his fair game against the poor, already run-down Cowboys, now for 6-8 weeks without Dak Prescott (fractured thumb of hand with which he throws). Carson Wentz between ups and downs still put two beautiful balls in the hands of rookie Jahan Dotson in Washington’s upset (modest but still such) on the Jags. Where evidently the faults were not all of Urban Meyer. Trevor Lawrence did not impress. Like Trey Lance, in the mud of Soldier Field, beaten by Justin Fields in a game that gave signs of potential surprise before the kickoff. Mac Jones looked like a fish out of water in an attack with no head (and not just the ward coach) or tail. Tua Tagovailoa continues to not provide certainty, but in the meantime he is 4-0 in his career against Belichick. Ah, and then such Pat Mahomes, phenomenon was, phenomenon remains.

They call them the disproportionate reactions of Monday. That is: the Packers are in trouble. Calm, a year ago they lost 38-3 to the Saints, only to finish first in the conference.
